x2socials is built on open-source work. The licences below require credit, and we are glad to give it.

Emoji artwork — Twemoji

Emoji in the images and videos we generate use Twemoji, maintained by jdecked. The graphics are licensed under CC-BY 4.0; the Twemoji source code is MIT. We scale the artwork to fit each export, so the copies we ship are modified from the originals.

Emoji are drawn into the file itself, so a PNG or MP4 you export that contains one carries Twemoji artwork inside it. Two things follow, and we would rather be straight about them:

  • The artwork stays under CC-BY 4.0 wherever it travels. Exporting does not change that, and it does not put your own words, images, or video under that licence either — CC-BY is not a share-alike licence.
  • The licence's attribution condition applies to whoever publishes the file. When you post an export containing emoji, that is you rather than us: the credit on this page covers the copies we hand you, not your onward publishing.

A complete credit names four things: who made the artwork, where it came from, the licence it is under, and the fact that it was changed — we scale it to fit your export, and CC-BY asks that a modification be indicated. One line covers all four:

Twemoji asks only that the mention be somewhere reasonable — its maintainers accept a website footer, an About section, or a project README. For a social post, the caption or the about page your profile links to is the practical equivalent.

An image or video with no emoji in it contains no Twemoji artwork, so nothing above applies. We are describing the licence here, not giving legal advice; its full text is linked above.

Apple emoji

The optional Apple emoji style renders artwork from Apple's emoji font, supplied by the emoji-datasource-apple package. That artwork is Apple's and is not offered under an open licence. Twemoji is the default for this reason, and we may remove the Apple option at any time.

Typeface — Inter

Text in your images and videos is set in Inter, copyright 2020 The Inter Project Authors, licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. Exported images and videos contain rendered letterforms rather than the font itself, so the OFL places no condition on the files you publish.

Typeface — Instrument Sans

The x2socials wordmark and interface are set in Instrument Sans, copyright 2022 The Instrument Sans Project Authors, licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. The site icon contains letterforms converted to outlines, and the watermark on Free exports contains rendered letterforms; neither distributes the font itself, so the OFL places no condition on the files you publish.
